physics is NOT just applied mathematics. Math, to a physicist, is but a tool, the language to describe the how, but the physical laws that govern the universe itself are their own real thing. Knowing math alone and being good at math does not mean one will be a good physicist. Its akin to saying that someone who has a master command of the English language will be a good writer and produce wonderfully complex works of literature. Having the tools alone is NOT enough. So again, no, physics is not just "applied mathematics".
