The bestselling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck and Get Your Sh*t Together, Sarah Knight, outlines her “NotSorry Method” to stop spending time you don’t have doing things you don’t want to do in her
humorous talk.
After fifteen years working in New York City’s top publishing houses,Sarah Knight struck out on her own. Since then, her essay “I Quit My JobToday (And So Can You!)”- went viral, and her book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck: How to Stop Spending Time You Don’t Have with People You Don’t Like Doing Things You Don’t Want to Do”, became a bestseller. The escape from corporate life and transformation into an “accidental anti-guru” continued when she and her husband moved to Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic. Sarah’s new book explains how to “Get Your Shit Together: How to Stop Worrying About What You Should Do So You Can Finish What You Need to Do and Start Doing What You Want to Do.” Sarah graduated cum laude with a degree in English and American Literature from
Harvard University.

In theory, this is just dandy, but the reality is somewhat different. I know because I decided that this was the way to go about fifteen years ago and I still have friendships that haven’t recovered in that time. If I’m going to the trouble and excitement and anticipation of throwing a dinner party and you flat-out tell me you’d rather not come I am likely to be hurt and insulted and it’s possible that I’ll never invite you to anything ever again. So, think twice before doing this because for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
The point about socializing with colleagues in a sh*ty bar is hilarious. I hate those forced socials just to fake the team spirit. Most of them are nothing but pain: intrusive personal questions, boring personal “ oversharing” stories etc. We are already spending at least 80% of our time at work to give away the remaining 20%, while life is so short. For God’s sake, let’s do baby showers or whatever during lunch breaks (even better, coffee breaks). And sorry, I am not coming to the Easter hang out to hear about your basement renovations and kid camps.
stop caring what people think and be yourself unapologetically. Just be who you are
yes you can eliminate some of these things but the speaker comes at this topic from a very luxurious position. the speaker was in a very successful job, quite probably good savings to facilitate lifestyle changes and has multiple options for what they can move on to in life. the things that keep most people stuck in these ruts is lack of higher education and career progression and are stuck in low paid jobs. In many cases they have family who are often dependant on them and even if they dont really want to be doing a lot of things in life that they are doing, they feel a deep obligation to continue them to help the people/family around them. This may include ageing parents, spouse and children, people with severe health conditions, anyone who you care for who is in some way dependant on you and may not be in a position to help themselves. i agree with some of the sentiment but it really isn't as easy as just snapping your fingers.
Wow, this hit f**king home
This is great in theory for the little things that annoy you…but for the bigger issues in your life she had a right at the beginning…you would need to walk away.
