I have stopped using email as much as possible. I only open emails that I have pre-arranged to be sent to me. In its current configuration it is an unnecessary security risk. Most of the email traffic on the Internet is spam, scams and hackers. It is no longer worth my time to sort through all the BS.
Feature bloat has made email programs a security risk for all users. The main culprits are hyperlinks and running embedded code. They were added for convenience and eye candy. The original hyperlinks were visible you could see where it was going to take you. Emails were in plain text you could see everything that was sent to you. When they add HTML to email programs that add a layer that most user aren't aware of today.
