How smart is Mother Nature? Not only does she enable us to grow a baby, but the body naturally provides our baby’s food as well… How cool is that?

Studies show that there is no concrete evidence that a breastfeeding mother will lose weight more than a mother who is not breastfeeding, but there are some definite benefits that breastfeeding will have for losing weight after pregnancy.

BENEFIT #1

As your baby is feeding, you will feel a pulling sensation in your tummy. This can be fairly painful for some new mum’s but considering what you have just been through with childbirth, it’s not that bad. Your should learn to welcome this feeling as it means that the hormone oxytocin is being released into the body due to breastfeeding. This hormone will make the uterus contract and return to it’s normal size quicker.

BENEFIT #2

During breastfeeding, it is very important to increase your intake of water. Not only is it vital to your well being and the nourishment of your baby, but it helps the body flush out fat and toxins through your urine, so the more you drink, the more you go, and the more you flush from your system, making it an aid to diet and weight loss.

BENEFIT # 3

Breastfeeding will burn at least 500 calories per day. The higher calorific requirement for breastfeeding is just one reason that a little extra body fat is stored during pregnancy so that mum will have a ready source of extra fuel to make the milk. Breastfeeding then becomes a good contributor to help a new mum lose weight.

BENEFIT # 4

Breastfeeding releases hormones that help your body to return to it’s normal level (pre-pregnancy) which in turn helps you regain your normal weight.

BENEFIT #5

We all know the benefits of eating a healthy daily diet, especially as an aid to weight loss, and we also know that the thing’s you eat whilst breastfeeding are nourishing your baby as well as yourself, so what better incentive is there than that, to maintain a healthy balanced diet.
