How does chemotherapy for breast cancer work? According to Dr. David Margileth, breast cancer patients have a wide range of chemotherapy drugs to choose from that can impact cure rate. These can be hormone replacement therapies such as tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors, to various chemotherapies of different toxicities. Most chemotherapies work by interfering with DNA replication, or the ability for cancer cells to grow and divide. These chemotherapies may also interfere with the major pathways driving the breast cancer, such as estrogen receptors.
