This is yet another presentist demonstration exaggerating how bad past eras were in order to make people living today feel smug and/or to make a crass political point. I've seen quite a few of these ads on other sites already. There's a reason the same ads are used for "shaming" over and over; in the long span of American advertising, there just weren't that many of them. It's called cherry-picking.
